Minister Dermot Ahern Outlines Handgun Ban
The Minister for Justice Equality and Law Reform, Mr. Dermot Ahern has outlined new proposals to seriously curtail the licensing of handguns in the state. The full text of his announcement can be found here.

The NTSA has no further details on how exactly this new regime will be implemented, but wish to point to the following paragraph in the Minister's statement "The Minister is prepared to make very limited exceptions in relation to Olympic sports only." Until we have further information, we are advising our members not to initiate any license applications for the present.

The Minister has also specified that radical tightening of the procedures for licensing handguns will be adopted and we assume that these will also apply to our members when they are published. We will advise you should any further details become available.

Co.Wicklow 50m Championships PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mark Dennehy
Monday, 10 May 2004
Image The Co.Wicklow 50m Championships took place this weekend, albiet in somewhat misty and damp conditions! We have photos of the competition in the gallery here. Comber shooter Davy Gaw took the gold medal in the Championships, Sandy Wilson (Fassaroe) took Silver and Ray Reilly, making a return to 50m, took Bronze.

Davy, who has represented Ireland in international competition many times in the past may have had a fair ways to come to get to the match, but the long journey seems not to have fazed him in the least, as he
won the competition outright with a six-point lead.

Second place went to Sandy Wilson of the Fassaroe Sporting Club, also a veteran Irish target shooter with several National Championships under his belt, but on the day Davy's performance just inched ahead of Sandy for the first half of the match and Sandy wasn't able to catch him in the second
half.

Third place went to Ray Reilly, another well-known veteran shooter (an alumni member of DURC), who has also represented Ireland internationally in the past and has several championship medals behind him. Ray was making his return to the 50m event today, and putting in a 582 with a strong finish, only just missed a tiebreaker with Sandy Wilson for Silver and instead had to settle for Bronze.

This shoot was the last registered selection shoot before the selection for June's Milan World Cup, and thus the pressure was on people to perform in particularly miserable weather. It was also the first 50m competition of the season in the Republic, so we can expect some close competitions in the coming months if this competition was any example.

Scores were as follows:
