Gary Duff of Comber Rifle Club is the new National Prone Champion. Going into the final with an unassailable five point lead, he shot an unconfirmed National final record of 103.5 to finish with 684.5. Second was Conor McDermottroe of Dublin University Rifle Club with an overall score of 675.0 and third was Leslie Fagan of Comber Rifle Club with a score of 673.1.
The National Championships were welcomed back to Midlands National Shooting Centre of Ireland after an absence of a year and in what were relatively calm but very difficult light conditions, a return to the high turnouts of previous championships was experienced. After the competition, NTSA Chairman Liam Crawford made a presentation of a crystal glass bowl to John Paul Craven; manager of the Midlands Range.

Richard Stapleton ran out of time and only fired 58 shots. Had he completed the match, he would have been well in contention for a medal having averaged a possible 583. Richard was surprisingly sanguine about the outcome feeling that he'd achieved his objective of shooting well and had stuck to his match rhythm throughout.

The Final was pretty much sewn up in first and second places, nobody threatening either of the top two. Third place was hotly contested however as there were three competitors on the same qualifying score of 574 and two more on 572. Four different people took the third place slot at varying stages, but eventually the man who started in that position: Leslie Fagan, finished there.

The team of three competition was won by the Defence Forces Shooting Team (Terry Wearen, Sean Baldwin and Joe O'Donohoe) with a score of 1711 followed by DURC and DRC. MNSCI fielded a team for the first time ever and recorded a highly creditable score of 1601.
The NTSA wish to thank all those who turned up to make this such an exciting and enthralling contest. We would especially like to thank those who helped assemble and disassemble the targets in Rathdrum and set everything up in Midlands. The help, assistance and encouragement from Jim Griffin and all at Midlands was as usual second to none. Special thanks to the mystery man who packed everything up in Rathdrum on Friday night without being asked or prompted in any way.
Extra Special thanks to Rathdrum Rifle and Pistol Club for the loan of their electronic target system. No one has commented on this article. |
