Minister Dermot Ahern Outlines Handgun Ban
The Minister for Justice Equality and Law Reform, Mr. Dermot Ahern has outlined new proposals to seriously curtail the licensing of handguns in the state. The full text of his announcement can be found here.

The NTSA has no further details on how exactly this new regime will be implemented, but wish to point to the following paragraph in the Minister's statement "The Minister is prepared to make very limited exceptions in relation to Olympic sports only." Until we have further information, we are advising our members not to initiate any license applications for the present.

The Minister has also specified that radical tightening of the procedures for licensing handguns will be adopted and we assume that these will also apply to our members when they are published. We will advise you should any further details become available.

Image Today's update sees the 10m Air Rifle (Men) event completed. Declan Kelly and Richard Stapleton both shot earlier today. Declan put in a 97, 93, 93, 94, 97, 95 for a total of 569, and while Richard took a different route (94, 96, 95, 94, 94, 96) he also put in a 569. This gave them joint 84th place, though while in the bottom third of the board, they were a comfortable distance from dead last (which dubious honour went to Hong Kong shooter Sek Hong Choi with 531).

The top end of the leader board was dominated by the usual big names, with Jie Li of China taking Bronze, Jozef Gonci taking Silver. However newcomer Min Ho Cheon of Korea took Gold with a commanding four-point lead going into the finals on 599, on just his first international appearance.

Jozef Gonci (SVK)

The lowest score for entry into the final was 595 and on countback at that - but entering at the bottom of the final was no handicap, since Josef Gonci managed to take Silver from a 595 start, and finished only 2.1 points behind Min Ho Cheon.
