Minister Dermot Ahern Outlines Handgun Ban

The Minister for Justice Equality and Law Reform, Mr. Dermot Ahern has outlined new proposals to seriously curtail the licensing of handguns in the state. The full text of his announcement can be found here.

The NTSA has no further details on how exactly this new regime will be implemented, but wish to point to the following paragraph in the Minister's statement "The Minister is prepared to make very limited exceptions in relation to Olympic sports only." Until we have further information, we are advising our members not to initiate any license applications for the present.

The Minister has also specified that radical tightening of the procedures for licensing handguns will be adopted and we assume that these will also apply to our members when they are published. We will advise you should any further details become available.

Hello all.

There are a few changes to the calendar, so keep an eye out for the next official release on July 1 - but before then, there's an additional event on June 17, the DURC 50m Open. Plan your training accordingly!

We've had an interesting month on the lobbying front - things with the licence fees and the introduction of the rest of the Criminal Justice Act 2006 which modifies the Firearms Acts so heavily have been thrown right up into the air with the results of the General Election making a change in Minister for Justice mandatory. We're keeping an eye on things, but don't let that get you thinking that that means things are taken care of. Keep an eye to your email and the website, stay in touch, and remember that the individual, grass-roots letterwriting and phone calls were what worked on this front, not the actions of any one shooting association or body.

On a more pleasant, sporting front, this month sees two new clubs joining up and there's at least one more new club lined up behind them again. And we've started to run 25m Smallbore Pistol matches this month, which is a very welcome addition to the
calendar.

We now have a national ranking in smallbore rifle; check out the rankings section at the bottom of the eMailshot.

We're still making progress with the review process, and I know people are getting impatient, but please bear with us just a little longer folks. We're going to be rolling out the changes as they're ready, so you should be seeing the start of the change announcements over the coming days.

Last Month:

Last committee meeting (May 14)

Last month's committee meeting was the mid-way point between the last AGM and this year's; so a review of all the agenda and tasklist items so far this year was done and we took stock of what we've done so far and what's left to do. The review process is in full swing right now and taking up the bulk of our time, but the licence fees issue and an attempt to gather information on political views on our sport prior to the election ate into our time as well. During all of this, we ran two events, a 50m event in the midlands as a test for the Nationals next month, and a 25m Nationals for 2006, delayed by quite a bit, which proved very interesting indeed (see below for more details).

The most immediately obvious task currently underway in the committee is the six-monthly review of the calendar. Our plan is to release the next version of the calendar on July 1, one month from today, which will have the next 18 months of events in it, so far as we are able to draft them. This, you will remember, is the new model we're trying out for the NTSA calendar - released every 6 months with 18 months on it, the first six being as set in stone as we can make them (though obviously events have kicked that attempt about a bit), the next six being a bit more malleable and the last six being a work in progress.

We will be depending on the clubs to work towards this goal as well. Without their efforts, matches just don't happen.

Speaking of clubs, one new club and one old club have been brought back into the NTSA this month; the Kerry Target Shooting Club and the Fermoy Rifle Club are both signing the paperwork and FRC will be hosting a 50m Open later this year. Welcome guys'n'gals, good to have you on board!

Please remember folks, the date of the next committee meeting is always up on the website, and the agenda for that meeting is up three days before it convenes.

NTSA 3x40/PR60 Event

Results are now in for the NTSA 3P/Prone event held at the MNSCI shooting grounds in Tullamore. Logistics as expected proved difficult with the result that the 3P event was delayed by two hours due to a combination of preparation taking a lot longer than anticipated, coupled with the desire to minimise disruption to MNSCI's other details being run on the day.

Sean Baldwin won the 3P event with a score of 1095, while Richard Stapleton Jr. won the Prone event on Sunday with a combined score of 681.8.

Conditions were relatively calm on Saturday, especially when it rained! The competition progressed smoothly after the delayed start. Sean Baldwin who was trailing by eleven points going into the kneeling position, secured the win with a storming 374 almost equalling his prone score!

Conditions on Sunday were extremely testing. The wind was very strong at times, and at one stage a mini-twister formed behind the 50m butts! Wind direction was changeable with it alternating between blowing directly at the shooters to blowing from left to right at varying strengths. We are still cleaning the sand out of the targets as I write this!
