FCP Notice re: Firearms Act roll out
Following advice from the Attorney General that Statutory Instruments giving effect to the firearms act amendments must apply to full sections of the Act and not to part sections, it is now the case that some of the planned roll out of the new firearms code will be delayed at least until the enactment of the Firearms Miscellaneous Bill which is due for publication on July 3rd under the Programme for Government. As a result, the intended classification of restricted firearms will not now be applied on May 1st 2008 as planned.

NTSA Monthly Mailshot

March 1, 2007
Hello all.

Many people have been wondering what's going on with the consultation process. I'd like to report that the membership survey which is going out with the membership forms are the final phase of taking suggestions that we're going to be looking at before making changes. They're due back in by Feb 28, so by the time you read this, all the taking in of suggestions will be completed. (That's not to say that we won't be open to change in the future, just that at some point we have to stop seeking opinions and actually do something!) A sub-group is being formed to work through the changes needed, meeting far more often than the full committee can and moving as quickly as is practicable; and the final proposals will then go back to be voted on by the committee. This isn't a small task. It may take a few more weeks. But bear with us, we're working as hard as we can on it.

As always, if you have any queries or suggestions, I want to hear them. Please send them by email to:

Secretary@targetshootingireland.org

Yours in Sport,

Mark Dennehy
Secretary, NTSA

Last Month:

Last committee meeting (Feb 1)

Please remember folks, the date of the next committee meeting is always up on the website, and the agenda for that meeting is up three days before it convenes.
  • Membership 2007

Membership forms have by now been sent out to every member of the NTSA. For 2007 members are requested to fill out their own membership forms and have their clubs endorse them. Membership for 2007 is set at €20 (€50 for clubs). Membership is due at the end of January and runs to January of the next year. If you've not sent in your renewal by now, you'll be getting a notice soon warning you that you'll be struck from the register come March 16 if you've not gotten your forms in.

Renewal of membership after the 31st of March will be subject to a late process fee of €10. New memberships will be accepted throughout the year however membership received within 5 working days of the Annual General Meeting may not be processed in sufficient time to permit attendance. Applications will not be processed with out the appropriate fee. All Cheques should be made payable to the ‘National Target Shooting Association.’ All applications should be returned to the Treasurer.

  • Upcoming International Events

Those international shooters who are looking for targets for their training plans should be advised that the NTSA has selected matches to attend for the remainder of the year. We will not be sending teams to matches not on this list.

The list of matches for 2007 is:
  • March 12-18 : European Airgun Championships, Deauville, France
  • May 28 - June 4 : ISSF World Cup, Munich, Germany
  • July 10-25 : European Championships, Granada, Spain
  • August 8-10 : GB Junior International, Bisley, UK
  • European Airgun Championships

The NTSA will be sending a single shooter to the European Airgun Championships in Deauville. Emma Lyons will be representing her country and gaining experience in a major match on March 16th, with Anthony Corballis acting in support as Team Manager. We wish them all the best.

  • Website

Okay, so I've not had the time I've needed to get the website repairs to www.TargetShootingIreland.org underway as yet (coaching duties for DURC have eaten all my time, but in a good cause!). However, that's now over, and expect repairs and improvements to commence this month...

Irish Sports Council Carding Announcement

The Irish Sports Council has announced the Carding Grant allocations for 2007. Four junior athletes in the NTSA have successfully qualified for carding, receiving €12000 in total to assist in their preparation, training and participation in National and International matches.

We would like to thank everyone who helped in organising these grants, which will make life a little easier financially for the juniors and their families as well as giving them access to sports experts in the University of Limerick and locally, and we wish to congratulate Damien, Susan, Paula and Elizabeth on the hard work it has taken from them to qualify for these grants.

Range Officer Training Course

A second RO Training course was run on February 3rd this month in UCD by Geoff Cooney. Six candidates from DURC and UCDRC attended and all passed this section of the course. All that remains now is for them to serve as Range Officers in a match and they will have completed the course and will be accredited by the NTSA.

Rathdrum Authorisation

As of Thursday February 8th, Rathdrum Rifle and Pistol Club are now authorised by the Gardai for the use of .22 Rifle and Pistol as well as Air Rifle and Pistol on their range in Rathdrum. The authorisation covers the use of these firearms in the prone, kneeling and standing positions as well as benchrest. The authorisation states that the range 'comprehensively meets the requirements'.

Coupled with the introduction of electronic targets (the first range in Ireland to use these), this authorisation now allows them to run all the ISSF short range disciplines as well as NSRA 25 yard and benchrest 25 yard.

They have since been given the go-ahead from Wicklow to re-open on foot of this authorisation.

Congratulations to Rathdrum; this hasn't been easy and they've come through it intact and with what is now one of the best equipped indoor ranges in the country.
